Mission Statement

The Mission of Women Empowered is to support Islanders in gaining control over their lives by helping them develop skills to manage money, resolve debt, explore job options, and identify resources. We do this through confidential one-on-one coaching, public workshops, tuition assistance, and micrloans. Clients in need are served regardless of race, religion, sex, or ethnicity.

History

Women Empowered was founded in 2000 by a retired special education teacher who recognized the need to support islanders dealing with change in their lives. During the next seven years years, two volunteer facilitators assisted approximately fifteen clients per year addressing the anxiety, fear, frustration and helplessness that comes from unemployment, under employment, overwhelming debt, and the perceived lack of control over their lives.

Since 2008, client calls have increased so dramatically that the facilitator team has grown to fifteen volunteers, most are retirees who bring outstanding career skills to our organization.

The What

WE offers education and support covering the following basic life skills:

*Problem Solving

*Decision Making

*Managing Household Finances

*Personal Organization

*Job Search Skills

After a free initial consultation (intake), a small one time fee is charged before beginning services. The sliding scale fee (based on income) encourages the client to commit to the program. Coaching then takes place on a one-to-one basis with non-judgemental acceptance and confidentiality being the cornerstones. We encourage our clients to realize they are in charge. We also offer follow up services so that clients can check in with the program when emergencies or difficult situations present themselves.

The Who

Women Empowered is staffed Monday through Friday by an office manager. Additionally, twenty one volunteers serve as facilitator/ coaches and/or board members for the organization. Volunteers come together at least one time per monthly to support the organization and each other.

The How

Clients are referred to Women Empowered by friends and family, by social service organizations, and especially by satisfied clients. WE is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that receives no support from county, state, or federal government. We provide life skills coaching to those who wish to build secure lives and achieve their potential, and we rely on donations to accomplish our work.
